Biography

Nikolai Ivanovich Gartung (1782–1859) was a figure of the Russian gentry during the Napoleonic era and the subsequent period of Imperial consolidation. He lived through transformative decades that shaped the trajectory of Russian society and culture.

Gartung's burial at Optina Pustyn, a spiritually significant monastery, suggests his deep religious faith and connection to the Orthodox Christian traditions that were central to Russian life. His life spanned nearly eight decades of Russian history.
