Biography

Abdülmecid I was the 31st Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from 1839 until his death in 1861. His reign marked the Tanzimat period, a transformative era of Ottoman reform and modernization that sought to strengthen the empire through administrative, military, and legal reforms. He was instrumental in initiating sweeping changes that aimed to modernize Ottoman institutions and governance structures.

His legacy encompasses significant efforts to reform the Ottoman state during a critical period of its history. Abdülmecid I was laid to rest at the Yavuz Selim Mosque, a burial place of considerable religious and historical significance that reflects his status as a major Ottoman ruler and his enduring importance to Ottoman historical memory.
