Biography

Abram A. Hammond, born in 1814, served as Indiana's ninth governor during the tense months leading up to the Civil War, striving to keep the state united while preparing its citizens for the trials ahead.

After leaving office he returned to private life in Indianapolis, where he remained active in civic causes and was remembered for his steady temperament and dedication to the common good as he rests at Crown Hill Cemetery.
