Biography

Acton Smee Ayrton was a politician who laboured tirelessly in Parliament for municipal reform, better public amenities, and the protection of London’s open spaces, notably during his service as First Commissioner of Works. He believed firmly that government should promote the wellbeing of ordinary citizens, and he stood for transparency and accountability even when facing heated criticism.
