Adam Clark

Biography

Adam Clark (1811–1866) was a Scottish-born civil engineer who embraced Hungary as his adopted home in the mid-nineteenth century and became the guiding mind behind the Chain Bridge and other pioneering works across the Danube. His meticulous approach to design and construction earned the trust of both local leaders and international partners as the city of Pest looked to modernize its connection with Buda.

As chief engineer of the Hungarian Royal Public Works, Clark ensured that railways, bridges, and ironworks could meet the demands of a growing capital while mentoring young engineers and supporting charitable causes. He now rests in Fiume Road Graveyard, a place of remembrance for many who shaped the rapid transformation of Budapest.
