Biography
Addison Norton Scurlock opened the Scurlock Studio in Washington, D.C., and for decades used his camera to celebrate Black life during an era when such dignity was too often denied. His portraits of families, clergy, and civic leaders radiated care, giving his clients a chance to present themselves with pride.
Scurlock's work became a valuable record of a resilient community, documenting graduations, marriages, and everyday grace with equal reverence. Even after the studio passed to the next generation, his images continued to inspire historians and descendants to remember a legacy of perseverance and artistry.
