Agnes Irwin

Biography

Agnes Irwin, born in 1841, transformed the landscape of women's education by founding the Agnes Irwin School and later serving as the first dean of Radcliffe College, where she championed rigorous academic standards and the intellectual growth of young women. She believed deeply that every girl deserved access to the same opportunities as boys, and she directed her considerable energy toward making that belief a reality.

Her leadership inspired generations of women to pursue scholarship and service, and her legacy lives on in the schools and programs that continue to uphold her ideals; she is commemorated at Saint James the Less Episcopal Churchyard, where her resolve and kindness remain an example to all.
