Alan Egerton, 3rd Baron Egerton

1845–1920 (age 75)

Biography

Alan Egerton, 3rd Baron Egerton, was born into a family of Lancashire and Cheshire landowners and carried forward that tradition as a Parliamentarian, devoting himself to the governance of the people he represented and to the cultural life of his county. His work in the Commons and later the Lords kept him close to the vexed questions of agriculture and industry that shaped the late Victorian era.

He drew strength from the peaceful parish of Rostherne, where friends found him attentive to the needs of the church and the village school; when he died in 1920 they laid him to rest beneath its yews, grateful for a lifetime of even-handed counsel.
