Albion W. Tourgée (1838-1905) rose from humble beginnings to become a Union officer, pioneering author, and judge whose writing and activism helped illuminate the promise of Reconstruction and the struggle for civil rights.
He carried his fierce belief in justice to every role he held, leaving a legacy of literary works and legal courage that is still honored today at the Mayville Cemetery where he rests.
