Biography

Alcaeus Hooper, who held Baltimore’s mayoralty in the 1890s, focused on fiscal responsibility and municipal improvements, shepherding policies that expanded street cleaning, lighting, and sanitary efforts during a time of rapid growth.

After reentering private business he continued to champion civic causes, serving on boards and investing in charitable efforts that supported schools, veterans, and the city’s cultural institutions.
