Biography

Alexander Gilchrist was a passionate editor and biographer whose Life of William Blake introduced the poet-artist to a wider public, blending scholarly research with vivid narrative. As an art critic he contributed to the Athenaeum and championed overlooked talents, believing firmly in the moral and imaginative promise of art.

Although he died before completing his major works, collaborators carried forward his plans, and his thoughtful judgments continued to influence collectors and curators, with his resting place at Kensal Green Cemetery reminding visitors of the energy he brought to Victorian letters.
