Biography

General Alexander A. Vandegrift was the first Marine to attain four-star rank and his leadership during the Guadalcanal campaign provided a turning point for Allied forces in the Pacific.

He is honored at Arlington National Cemetery for embodying the spirit of the Corps, inspiring Marines with his calm courage and dedication to duty under fire.
