1904–1918 (age 14)

Heir apparent

Biography

Alexei Nikolaevich was the Tsarevich of Russia and only son of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra. Born in 1904, he was the heir apparent to the Russian throne during a period of great political and social upheaval in the Russian Empire. As the long-awaited male heir, his birth was celebrated throughout Russia, though his life would be marked by the hemophilia that caused him considerable suffering.

Alexei's brief life was intertwined with the fate of his family during the Russian Revolution. In July 1918, he was executed along with his parents and siblings by Bolshevik forces in Yekaterinburg, ending the Romanov dynasty's rule. He was buried in the Peter and Paul Cathedral, the traditional resting place of Russian imperial family members.
