Alina Szapocznikow
1926–1973 (age 47)
Biography
Alina Szapocznikow was born in 1926 in Poland and survived the horrors of the Second World War before finding Paris as her home, where she trained as a sculptor and turned to the human body as both subject and witness.
Alongside her celebrated sculptures she used photography to document anonymous bodies, personal intimacies, and the process of healing, sharing in Montmartre a quietly defiant voice that transformed trauma into tender testimony until her death in 1973.
