Biography

Alvan Wentworth Chapman was born in 1809 and devoted his life to cataloging the native plants of the South, producing a flora that guided both scientists and farmers through the many varieties of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

Settled in Apalachicola in his later years, he shared his discoveries with students and neighbors, inspiring wonder at the region's natural bounty and reminding all who met him of the patience required to know the land deeply.
