Biography

Andrew Barclay Spurling enlisted to serve during the Civil War and quickly earned a reputation for courage and calm under fire. He fought in numerous engagements in the Western Theater and was recognized for valor in the field, actions that later won him the Medal of Honor.

After the war he settled in Chicago, where he remained active in veterans’ circles and worked to ensure that his comrades’ sacrifices were remembered. His steadfastness and willingness to serve gave him a revered place among those who guarded the city’s memory of the conflict.
