Biography

Andrew Ellicott was born in 1754 and became one of the most accomplished surveyors and mathematicians of the early American republic. His precise work in mapping and measuring the nation's boundaries and territories was instrumental in defining the physical geography of the United States during its formative years.

Ellicott's contributions to surveying the Mason-Dixon Line, the boundaries of the District of Columbia, and numerous state borders established standards for accuracy that influenced American cartography for generations. He died in 1820 and was buried at West Point Cemetery, reflecting his significant contributions to the nation's military and scientific institutions.
