Biography

Antoine de Rivarol (1753–1801) was a French writer and intellectual whose sharp wit and literary talents made him a notable figure in late 18th-century European letters. Known for his critical acumen and eloquent prose, Rivarol engaged in the intellectual debates of his era, producing works that reflected both the brilliance and the turbulence of the Revolutionary period and its aftermath.

Rivarol's career as a writer encompassed essays, criticism, and satirical works that demonstrated his command of language and his engagement with the pressing intellectual questions of his time.
