Archie Clement came of age in the border conflicts that scarred Missouri, leading a band of guerrillas during the Civil War and carrying on after the war ended, driven by loyalties that ran deep in the contested landscape.

His death in 1866 brought a close to one of the war's most turbulent chapters, and those who remember him still see in his story the lingering ache of a region longing for peace.
