Arthur Horner
1894–1968 (age 74)
Biography
Arthur Horner rose from the mining communities of the early twentieth century to become a steadfast trade unionist whose advocacy brought strength and dignity to Britain’s coalfields. He played a leading role in uniting miners, negotiating better safety, wages, and working conditions, and his calm determination guided the movement through the upheavals of two world wars.
Even after retirement, his influence endured in the institutions he helped reform and in the comrades who carried his example forward; he is commemorated for his enduring service at Golders Green Crematorium.
