Arthur Perigal the younger

1816–1884 (age 68)

Biography

Arthur Perigal the younger carried on the artistic heritage of his father, teaching himself to render thoughtful landscapes and poetic historical scenes that were admired at the Royal Academy and in circles that appreciated calm colour and careful draughtsmanship. He believed in art as a gentle teacher, inviting viewers to pause and behold the quieter moods of nature and the lessons of history.

Now remembered in Dean Cemetery, his tablet welcomes those who love the arts to consider how a painter's life can be a steady study in observation and care for the human story. His pupils recalled him as a patient guide who insisted on kindness as well as technique.
