Biography

Arturo Prat y Ureta, trained as a lawyer, placed duty to country above all else when he joined the Chilean Navy and devoted himself to naval discipline and honour.

When the Esmeralda faced overwhelming Peruvian forces at Iquique he led his crew in the face of certain death, offering himself as an example of sacrifice whose memory endures for Chile.
