Biography

Born in 1869, Artus Van Briggle studied painting and enameling before turning his creative energy to ceramics; settling in Colorado Springs for his health, he co-founded Van Briggle Pottery and pioneered the matte glazes, sinuous lines, and subtle hues of American Art Nouveau.

Although he died in 1904 at the height of his acclaim, his vessels, lamps, and tiles live on in museums and private collections, continuing to inspire artists while his remains lie in Evergreen Cemetery near the studios he built.
