Biography

August Matthias Hagen was a painter whose landscapes and architectural studies brought the Baltic provinces to life on canvas. Trained at the St. Petersburg Academy, he later returned to the local scene to teach and to capture the graceful interplay of light and stone that defined the region.

He produced illustrations for architectural publications, educated younger artists, and left behind a body of work that preserved both natural vistas and the cultural monuments of his day. Hagen’s legacy continues to enrich the artistic heritage of Estonia.
