Biography

Augustus Gabriel de Vivier Tassin emigrated from France as a young man, embraced the United States, and served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army during the Civil War and the later Indian campaigns while documenting his experiences in detailed writings.

His burial at Arlington National Cemetery honors a life spent both in uniform and in the chronicling of army life during a formative era for the West.
