Baby Fae (1984-1984) became a symbol of both medical daring and human vulnerability when she received a baboon heart transplant at a time when experimental surgery was pushing the boundaries of care.
Though her life was far too brief, her case forced the medical field to examine ethical questions and galvanized support for pediatric organ donation, and she now rests at Osage City Cemetery.
