Benjamin Greene

1780–1860 (age 80)

Biography

Benjamin Greene grew a modest inn-yard brewery into the enterprise now known as Greene King, investing in steam power and in the people of Bury St. Edmunds to create reliable employment.

His business success was matched by civic virtue—he lent support to schools and public improvements, convinced that industry carried a duty to uplift its town, and his grave at Highgate rests near others who shaped Victorian commerce.
