Biography
Benjamin Ide Wheeler brought rigorous scholarship and organizational skill to the presidency of the University of California in 1899, guiding the young institution through rapid growth, expanding its curriculum, and laying foundations for graduate study and professional schools.
He steered the university through challenges such as the 1906 earthquake, promoted research and international collaboration, and, after retiring, remained a cherished mentor whose love of learning lifted students and faculty alike.
