Berenice Sydney

1944–1983 (age 39)

Biography

Berenice Sydney developed her lyrical visual language while studying in London and quickly gained notice for canvases flooded with vivid colour, playful forms and references to myth and nature. She moved between painting, collage and printmaking, letting line and pattern dance so vigorously that rhythm became a subject in itself.

Her exhibitions in the 1970s and early 1980s drew praise for their imaginative energy and for a sense of hopefulness that offset darker currents in contemporary art, and works from major collections continue to inspire artists exploring abstraction and narrative alike. Friends remember Sydney for her generosity and the way she treated the act of painting as a joyful exploration rather than a battle, encouraging others to follow their impulses.
