Biography
Betty Meggers was a pioneering archaeologist whose fieldwork and scholarship reshaped the understanding of South American prehistory and tropical ecology. At the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History she helped build the department of anthropology's collections and mentored students exploring the interplay between environment and culture.
Through her meticulous research and warm exchange of ideas, she cultivated friendships across continents, leaving a legacy of curiosity and respect for the people whose histories she studied; she now rests at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
