Biography

Biddy Mason (1818–1891) rose from a life bounded by slavery to become a compassionate nurse and midwife in Los Angeles. She tended expectant mothers and families with steady hands and unwavering faith, becoming a beacon of care for a growing city.

With the same resolve that freed her, she gave back to neighbors in need, supporting houses of worship and providing shelter for the newly arrived. Her legacy of generosity continues with quiet gratitude beside her friends at Evergreen Cemetery.
