Buck Ewing, native of the mainland, became one of baseball's earliest stars as catcher, shortstop and manager, thrilling fans with his all-around skill and leadership in the pre-modern era of the game.

After his playing days he remained a beloved figure among teammates and admirers, happily recounting tales of the diamond while being honored at his resting place on Mount Washington.
