Biography
Carl Hans Lody left his native Bremen as a reserve officer of the Imperial German Navy, entering Britain early in the conflict with the intention of collecting naval intelligence. When the plot was uncovered, he accepted responsibility for his actions and stood before the court with a steadfast demeanour, aware of the consequences that awaited him and ultimately facing execution at the Tower of London.
He was executed in 1914, and decades later his remains found rest in East London Cemetery, where visitors pause to reflect on the complexities of wartime service and the human stories behind it.
