Casimir de Candolle

1836–1918 (age 82)

Biography

Casimir de Candolle inherited the storied Candolle tradition and devoted himself to understanding how plants distribute themselves across mountains and plains, publishing careful monographs that reflected both field observation and a disciplined sense of classification.

He maintained the great herbariums, encouraged younger naturalists through correspondence, and insisted that the study of plants remain grounded in service to agriculture and public education.
