Biography
Caspar Wessel (1745–1818) was a mathematician who first described complex numbers geometrically, publishing a treatise that mapped them onto the plane and without seeking fame laid groundwork for future analysts; he is remembered with other scholars at Assistens Cemetery.
A member of learned societies, he applied his analytical mind to surveying and navigation and served as a calm advisor to students and engineers who relied on his precise thinking.
