Biography
Cass Canfield (1897-1986) led Harper & Row through decades of transformation, supporting authors whose voices helped define modern literature and thought. He believed that publishing was a partnership and made the time to champion writers facing risky ideas as well as popular ones.
Beyond his professional realm he lent his energy to civic affairs and cultural institutions, combining business savvy with a generous sense of civic duty. He is laid to rest at St. Matthew's Episcopal Churchyard, remembered as a gracious steward of both letters and community.
