Biography

Céleste Albaret devoted decades of her life to Marcel Proust, serving as his loyal housekeeper and confidante during the final years of the author’s life. Born in 1891, she witnessed the quiet discipline of Proust’s daily work and offered steady companionship that allowed him to continue shaping an incomparable literary vision.

After his passing, Albaret shared her memories in the memoir Monsieur Proust, giving readers an intimate glimpse of their shared years and the rhythms of Rue de l’Odéon. Her gentle presence and steadfast service live on through those recollections, and she now rests at the cemetery of Montfort-l'Amaury.
