Charles Andler
1866–1933 (age 67)
Biography
Charles Andler spent his life as a scholar of German culture, illuminating the careers of thinkers such as Nietzsche and Goethe while teaching at the Sorbonne and publishing lucid studies that helped French readers understand their neighbour’s complex intellectual currents.
His erudition and calm advocacy for scholarly exchange strengthened Franco-German understanding during difficult years, and he now rests at Père Lachaise, a fitting place for a historian who bridged cultures.
