Charles Bennett Ray

Biography

Charles Bennett Ray, born in 1807, was a pioneering abolitionist and editor whose newspaper, the Colored American, gave voice to the fight for emancipation and equal rights.

He also worked quietly with antebellum aid societies, supported schools for African American children, and later provided counsel to Freedmen's agencies as the nation sought to rebuild.
