Charles Bowles

Biography

Charles Bowles (1884-1957) devoted much of his life to civic engagement, including service as mayor of Detroit during times that required fortitude and vision. He sought to increase efficiency in government while listening to the concerns of workers and families striving for stability.

Though he faced fierce debates, Bowles continued to participate in city affairs, supporting charitable causes and encouraging young people to pursue the common good. He rests at Evergreen Cemetery, remembered for striving to balance bold ideas with compassion.
