Biography

Charles Canning, 1st Earl Canning, born in 1812, served as Governor-General and then Viceroy of India during one of its most turbulent chapters, guiding the administration through the Indian Rebellion of 1857 with measured resolve. He worked to stabilize the colony, balancing reform with respect for tradition while ensuring loyalty to the Crown.

His tenure also oversaw the founding of the Indian Civil Service as we now know it and the beginnings of what became the British Raj, and he remained a dignified representative of parliamentary responsibility until his death. He is remembered as a statesman who tried to reconcile imperial governance with humanitarian principles.
