Charles Cooley

Biography

Charles Cooley (1864–1929) taught sociology at the University of Michigan and penned essays such as "Social Organization" and "Human Nature and the Social Order," introducing generations to the principle of the "looking-glass self." He combined philosophical insight with empirical observation to explore how individuals relate to the larger community.

Cooley encouraged students to see sociology as both a scientific discipline and a humane endeavor, one that could strengthen democracy by deepening mutual understanding. His legacy rests in the continued study of community life, and his grave at Forest Hill Cemetery draws those who revere his thoughtful scholarship.
