Charles Follis, born in 1879, defied entrenched barriers and became the first African American professional football player, earning respect with his skill, sportsmanship, and tireless work ethic. He played with the Shelby Blues, blazing a trail while encouraging young men of every background to pursue their dreams.
Beyond the field he remained humble and generous, mentoring athletes and sharing stories of perseverance; though his life was cut short, the inspiration he provided endures in the halls of Wooster Cemetery.
