Charles Francis Pietsch

Biography

Charles Francis Pietsch, born in 1844, helped to sustain Chicago's growing cultural life through his work in publishing and his support of the immigrant community. He believed that a free press could strengthen neighborhoods by keeping citizens informed and connected.

Those who knew him remember a principled man devoted to civic improvement and the arts, and his legacy lives on in the foundations of Graceland Cemetery where he rests.
