Charles Gleyre

Biography

Charles Gleyre was a distinguished Swiss painter and influential art teacher who profoundly shaped the artistic landscape of the nineteenth century. Born in 1806, he developed a reputation for his refined academic style and his dedication to instructing the next generation of artists.

Throughout his career, Gleyre maintained a studio in Paris where he mentored numerous students who would themselves become notable artists. His commitment to artistic excellence and education left an enduring mark on European art. He was buried at La Sallaz cemetery following his death in 1874, remembered as a master of his craft and a devoted educator.
