Charles Huntziger

1880–1941 (age 61)

Biography

Charles Huntziger (1880–1941) spent his career in the uniform of the French army, rising through the ranks after service in the First World War and helping to shape the interwar military institutions that would be tested a second time in 1939.

He took command of France’s field armies during the crisis of 1940 and later served as Minister of War, and the hush of Passy Cemetery now holds his grave as a reminder of his years of leadership in fraught days.
