Charles Morehead

1807–1882 (age 75)

Biography

Charles Morehead gained distinction as a physician in India, where he reorganised medical education, championed vaccination, and sought to make Western medicine accessible to the people of Bombay and the surrounding provinces. His colleagues admired him for his steadiness in epidemics and for the compassion with which he taught young surgeons to treat every patient with dignity.

The Dean Cemetery memorial bears witness to how much he was prized by the medical community and by his family, paying tribute to a man whose skills saved lives on two continents. Visitors can still sense his devotion to healing and education from the carved stone that stands there.
