Biography

Charles P. Clever emigrated to the United States from Germany and became an influential attorney and politician in New Mexico Territory, ultimately serving as its delegate to the U.S. Congress. He brought diligence and a commitment to the rule of law to a frontier region seeking stability and representation in the national dialogue.

After his tenure in Congress, Clever continued to serve his adopted community before his death in 1874; he was laid to rest in Santa Fe National Cemetery, where his service to the territory and the nation continues to be remembered.
