Charles Rothschild

1877–1923 (age 46)

Biography

Charles Rothschild, scion of the distinguished Rothschild banking dynasty, was known not only for his leadership in finance but also for his deep passion for natural science. He devoted considerable time to the study of entomology and to the early conservation movement, advocating for the preservation of Britain’s natural habitats while guiding the family’s banking interests with steady hand.

He maintained a generous involvement with charitable causes and with Jewish communal institutions, striving to combine civic responsibility with personal scholarly pursuits. His life, cut short in 1923, left a lasting legacy of stewardship of both cultural and natural treasures, and he is honoured in the quiet grounds of Willesden Jewish Cemetery.
