Biography
Charles S. Roberts, founder of the Avalon Hill Game Company, pioneered the publication of detailed board wargames that allowed history enthusiasts to test strategies on map-based simulations of Gettysburg and other battles. His 1954 release of Tactics introduced the mass market to hex-and-counter systems, and he championed the idea that games could be both educational and entertaining.
He nurtured a worldwide community of hobbyists, encouraging them to share scenarios, publish newsletters, and debate tactics with civility; his own reverence for meticulous research kept each title anchored to the real challenges faced by soldiers and leaders. Baltimore's gaming circles continue to honor his legacy through gatherings and commemorations of his innovations.
