Charles S. Roberts, founder of the Avalon Hill Game Company, pioneered the publication of detailed board wargames that allowed history enthusiasts to test strategies on map-based simulations of Gettysburg and other battles. His 1954 release of Tactics introduced the mass market to hex-and-counter systems, and he championed the idea that games could be both educational and entertaining.

He nurtured a worldwide community of hobbyists, encouraging them to share scenarios, publish newsletters, and debate tactics with civility; his own reverence for meticulous research kept each title anchored to the real challenges faced by soldiers and leaders.
